beers of austria: eggenberg urbock

ahh, now this is a beer i appreciate. billing itself as "one" of the strongest beers in the world, it's got a solid 9% booze backing its smoky, malty goodness. mine was hostel-room temperature when i drank it, so i got the full effect of its wild bounty of sugars and alcohols. for a second i thought i tasted strawberries. if i lived a thousand kilometers southeast of where i am now, i would drink this beer all the time.

This was one of the beers used to celebrate my friend Ganesh's recent PhD defense and departure for Germany. He had actually aged one for a year, but I think the variations in temperature had a negative effect on it. The fresher one, however, was pleasurable and potent. Hellbocks are pretty low on my list of fun beers to drink often, but this one is nice. The delirium from the Delirium Tremens I had afterwards obliterated any exact memories of flavor profile, but a hint of candied strawberry wouldn't surprise me at hostel temperature. A warm hellbock is often like licking a beer-flavored lollipop, which could be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on perspective...
Also, the Eggenberg Pils is a standard tap at a few bars around Charlottesville. It seems to hit the pleasant, central-european pils market square in the center.
